Famous Dragons... Smaug

Our ode to pop culture dragons soars on this week as Pete's Dragon prepares to land in theaters Friday. Yesterday we looked at Dragon Man of Fantastic Four fame. Today we'll set our collectible sights on author J.R.R. Tolkien's winged antagonist from "The Hobbit," Smaug.

Tolkien introduced readers to Smaug back in 1937 with publication of "The Hobbit." Director Peter Jackson brought him further into the public eye with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (the dragon was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) in 2013. In both literary and cinematic form, Smaug is greedy, intelligent and ferocious. Here are a few Smaug goodies worth getting your claws on.

The Hobbit Fine Art Print, Harlan Elam/Hero Complex Gallery

The Hobbit Fine Art Print by Harlan Elam/Hero Complex Gallery
This limited edition fine art giclee print from artist Harlan Elam was produced as part of Hero Complex Gallery's "Imagined Worlds 2" show. The 16"x24" print features Smaug atop the Lonely Mountain with the One Ring almost acting as a sunrise behind the beast. Elam's print is extremely limited with an edition of only 25. It's tough to track down on the secondary market and fetches much more than the $45 it initially sold for.

Funko released several Pop! Vinyls from Peter Jackson's "Hobbit" films, including this 6" "super sized" gold Smaug Hot Topic exclusive. The figure goes for about $40-$50 on the secondary market. Look out for the standard version as well ($30-$40).

Smaug the Terrible Bust, Weta Collectibles

Smaug the Terrible Bust by Weta Collectibles
Weta collectibles has put out some impressive pieces based on "Lord of the Rings," "The Hobbit" and other properties. This fearsome statue from sculptor Andrew Baker and company is more than 14" tall, 18" wide and weighs a healthy 23 pounds. The hand-painted bust is available through the Weta Workshop website for a Smaug-worthy $400.

Swing back tomorrow as our nod to dragons continues all week on CollecTwins!
