You call me boy...

Today is Ron Perlman's 66th birthday, and as much of a fan I am of Sons of Anarchy, and I even remember that great little film The Last Supper; Perlman to me, is Hellboy more than anything else. So to celebrate the occasion I thought today would be a good day to spotlight some of the finest Hellboy items the collectible world has to offer...

The three Hellboy first appearances... (Dime Press #4, San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2, Next Men #21 - 1993)

Depending on who you ask, Hellboy may have first appeared in any of these three titles (The Dime Press is a cover only prototype and he's grey, the San Diego Comic Con was super limited to attendees that year, and the Next Men was his introduction to mainstream comics continuity...). To be safe, to say you have Hellboy's first appearance in your collection, you should probably have all three of these issues. None are cheap these days, but now is a good time to go after them as Hellboy has quieted down some lately...

Hellboy statue by Electric Tiki (2005)

One of the great companies to produce statues and maquettes over the past decade plus, Electric Tiki doesn't do much these days but their pieces are top-notch. Sometimes they show up on eBay...

Hellboy II poster by Mondo/Ken Taylor (2011)

I'll admit I'm a big time collector of all things Mondo and Ken Taylor is one of my favorite poster artists out there. The Australian has killed it on posters for Pearl Jam and The Avett Brothers, and is at his best when the subject is film. This one is fantastic but will run you upwards of $250 if you find one on the bay...

Here's to hoping we actually get one more out of Perlman and Del Toro - this franchise screams trilogy.

  1. Perlman has used his let's say unusual facial features to make him a star. His tough yet kind characterization in Hellboy makes it fun to watch.
