TMNT Out of the Shadows Week: Casey Jones

Hot on the heels of our post about TMNT (that's short for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for those not in the know) baddies Bebop and Rocksteady comes this glance at one of the turtles' longtime allies, the sports-themed vigilante Casey Jones. Jones is the other pop culture character recognized for wearing a hockey mask (the first of course being Jason Voorhees of "Friday the 13th" fame). Casey Jones made his first appearance in the pages of Raphael #1 (1985), which we mentioned in our earlier post about Raphael, and has gone on to become a key element of the TMNT universe.

Stephen Amell in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows"
Casey Jones was originally played by Elias Koteas ("Some Kind of Wonderful") in the cheeky TMNT films of the 1980s, while "Arrow" star Stephen Amell takes over the role for the new generation of TMNT fans. Here's a look at some terrific Casey Jones collectibles.

Casey Jones figure, Playmates (1989)

Casey Jones figure by Playmates
Part of the original TMNT toy line by Playmates, this release of Casey Jones represents the character's first ever action figure and includes an accessory in the form of Casey's weapon carrier -- a converted golf bag. The figure goes for $65-$90 on eBay or at a toy show, depending on condition.

Casey Jones and Splinter screenprint, Bottleneck Gallery (2014)

Casey Jones and Splinter screenprint by Rhys Cooper
This gorgeous, limited edition screenprint by artist Rhys Cooper features Casey and Splinter ready for action. The print measures 12"x36" and was limited to only 200 pieces. Tracking one down is the tricky part.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #48, Mirage Publishing (1992)

Casey Jones makes a rare and impressive cover appearance in this key TMNT issue from the early '90s. Not a particularly valuable book, which can be found on eBay or at your local comic shop, but an important addition to the collection for any Casey Jones fan.

Come back tomorrow as our TMNT posts continue. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" opens Friday, June 3.
